                July 2009

Welcome to the July, 2009 edition of The Millpost, the newsletter of the Odom’s Mill Community Association. The Board of Directors has decided to bring The Millpost out of retirement, in order to address current issues and news of interest to the community. The intent is to place a monthly web edition on the association website, plus hand deliver a hard copy of the first edition to generate interest in our website. Now on with news.

Volunteers Needed

The Board is desperately seeking volunteers for several areas of service, in order for our association to function both legally and effectively. Sad but true, our association is directed and staffed by the same eight to ten people, year after year. New viewpoints and perspectives are needed in such areas as architectural review, penalties and fines, communications, finance and social planning, just to name a few. If you are more interested in serving on the Board, then elections are scheduled each Fall for the following year. Either way, your involvement would be welcome. You may contact any Board Member for more information or feel free to attend the next meeting.

Street Parking

As you know, overnight parking is not permitted by our covenants and restrictions for safety reasons. Our streets are narrow, two-way lanes and the presence of children creates a very dangerous situation around street side parked vehicles. The Board is exploring various ways of enforcing the parking restriction in a fair and equitable fashion, with the safety of our residents and children in mind. More information will be forthcoming.

Grass Clippings and Yard Debris

Our storm drainage system is a valuable resource and serves us well in times of flooding rains. The rainwater is collected by the gutters and catch basins strategically located on each street and from there it flows into our lake. The lake is controlled by a dam on Landrum Lane and excess water is removed by the Canal Authority, eventually flowing into the Intracoastal Waterway either by pump or tidal action. This system is designed based on the size and number of home sites being served. In order for the drainage system to continue to function properly, keep grass clippings and yard debris from entering the street and/or catch basins. This will prevent the clogging of the drainage system and preclude a potentially flooding situation. Remember also to dispose of all yard debris properly, collection day is Monday and bagging is preferred.

Security Alert

Crime of all types is on the rise and the St. Johns County Sheriff’s Office recommends that you stay alert, lock your car, garage your car and keep garage doors closed and locked. If trouble is noted, contact Deputy Diana Bryant (810-6694) or email dibryant@sjso.org

Association Fees

Please remember that the semiannual assessments are due in July. These funds are needed to ensure the continued operation of our association and to provide enhancements to community property.

Have a Safe and Enjoyable Fourth of July
